Which is the “Best” Fitness Program for You if You are Over 50?

Question Mark

If you are a woman over 50 and you have finally decided (again!) to try to get in shape, you may be wondering which is the “best” fitness program for you?

The Answer Is…

It all depends.

The “Best” Fitness Program Depends on You, Your Fitness Level, Your Goals and What You Like to Do and Can Do

Whether you are a man or a woman, 50 or 15, there is no one single answer to this question.

The truth is that there is no “one size fits all” fitness routine that anyone/everyone should do.

Yes, you can join a bootcamp and jump around.

Yes, you can do group classes or yoga.

There is nothing wrong with any of this.

But…

That doesn’t make these fitness programs the “best” fitness programs for you.

Because group exercise classes are not tailored to your needs.

Listen, we are all unique. Physically, mentally, and emotionally.

We each have our own idea of fitness, our own abilities, our own exercise likes and dislikes.

Personally, while I love power walking, I absolutely can’t stand jogging. Don’t ask me why. There’s barely a difference in the pace of what I consider to be walking fast and what I consider to be jogging—but there it is. If I even think I’m jogging, I stop.

What you can do, want to do, and like to do, completely depends on where you are in your life and your individual tastes.

Which is why personal training —and 1-on-1 personal training in particular—is so valuable.

It is focused entirely on you and what is “best” for you. One-on-one personal training is designed for you and only you to help you make the transformation you want.

So if someone tells you there is one “best” fitness program or diet program or one “best” exercise to do—don’t fall for it.

That said, there certainly are some exercises that provide more value than others. For example, compound lifts provide more value than isolation lifts because they target more muscles.

Unilateral movements, for example, single leg deadlifts, provide great value because they help you to identify asymmetries in your body and can help you strengthen weak areas.

Other exercises, like crunches or side bends, provide little to no value at all.

What it comes down to is that the “best” fitness program for you is the one that is designed to fit you and get you to your goals.

Of course, you can do this yourself.

But if you would like to take the guesswork out of it, working with an experienced certified personal trainer is of tremendous value.
